The Aquatic Milkweed is a Florida native herbaceous perennial with erect, dark-purplish green stems, elongated leaves, and clusters of small whitish flowers. Each cluster can produce up to 25 flowers. Flowers bloom in late spring to early fall. A strikingly unique feature to the Aquatic Milkweed is right before the flowers bloom. These tight, small ball-clusters have faint, pink tips that look like the shape of a starfish. This easy to grow wildflower reaches 1 to 2 feet in height. Aquatic Milkweed grows in full sun to shade. It grows best in moist to wet, loamy or sandy soils. It can tolerate short periods of drought once established but soil should be kept moist in order to thrive. This versatile wildflower is low maintenance; light annual pruning may be necessary to remove dead stems. The flowers are an important nectar source for native bees and the Monarch, Queen and Soldier butterfly; making the Aquatic Milkweed an excellent choice in mixed butterfly and wildflower gardens. It also does well in a container that can be used as an accent on a patio or deck.
