The American Beautyberry is a Florida native shrub and is known to be hurricane and wind resistant. It can grow to be 4 to 8 feet high and 3 to 6 feet wide. This shrub blooms in the spring with showy white and pink flowers. It bears showy magenta or sometimes white fruit that can be used to make jelly.
American Beautyberry is relatively maintenance free and grown best in full sun or partial shade and in a loam or sand soil environment. Though it can handle salty wind, it does not tolerate direct salt spray. It is recommended to prune in the winter to encourage blooming and maintain its shape.
The fruit from the American Beautyberry attracts mockingbirds and robins. It is an excellent shrub that draws the attention of butterflies, snowberry cleaning moths, and a variety of bee species.
You can find the American Beautyberry as a single plant in a garden which blends in well with pines, oaks, and darker-leaved shrubs. They are visually appealing grouped together, making them ideal for mass plantings or a screen.
