The Black Eyed Susan is a Florida native flower that grows to a height of 1 to 2 feet and 1 to 2 feet wide forming a clumping mound. This is a short-lived perennial with large yellow flowers and brown seed head. This wildflower typically blooms in spring and fall.
Black Eyed Susan likes full sun and well draining soils. Space the flowers 1.5 to 2 feet apart for a mass planting landscape project and you will have a colorful ground cover attracting bumble bees and butterflies. The large yellow flowers with its brown seed heads are inviting to small, seed-eating birds, such as finches.
The Black Eyed Susan can be found in meadows and wildflower gardens and make great cut flowers. They can also be seen on roadsides, waste places, or growing as a natural vegetational cover.
