The Blanket Flower mainly grows on the Florida coast and can be found in clay, loam, and sandy soil. Its showy flowers have a variety of colors: yellow, orange, and red. Dormant in the winter, this is an annual to short-lived perennial that grows at a maximum height of 1.5 feet and maximum width of 2 feet.
Blanket Flower grows best in full sun and are highly tolerant to salty wind and spray. However, do not over water as this can lead to root rot. These colorful wildflowers attract a variety of pollinators: native bees, honey bees, butterflies, and wasps. Seed eating birds such as chickadees, titmice, and warblers are attracted to this flower as well. The Kiowa Indians believed the flowers brought luck.
They can be used in wildflower gardens, cultivated flower beds, and as roadside wildflower plantings. Because of their tolerance to heat and drought, they are an excellent choice for planting on beaches. Spaced 2 to 3 feet apart for a mass planting, they are an attractive choice for a walkway or driveway.
