The Native Blue Porterweed is a low-growing sprawling wildflower no higher than 1 feet tall with a spread of 3 to 4 feet. This fast-growing short-lived perennial typically blooms year round and is characterized by dark green leaves and a short central stem that becomes brown and woody with age. Many stems arise from the base of the plant. Distinctive purplish-blue flowers with a unique, white-eye center are born on long, erect narrow spikes. Several flowers open, lasting for only one day. Flowers may not bloom when the weather is overcast.
Native Blue Porterweed thrives in full sun and well-drained soil environments. Known to be beneficial to a variety of pollinators, this versatile plant is an excellent addition to a butterfly garden as its nectar attracts a variety of butterflies and hummingbirds. Its low-growing habit makes it a nice ground cover for border plantings. It also performs well in a container to be used in smaller spaces or on a patio or deck.
