The Bald Cypress Seedling is a moderately fast growing tree reaching 40 to 50 feet in about 15 to 20 years and capable of reaching 100 feet as they get older. The Taxodium Distichum species grows mostly with a straight trunk that is not prone to develop double or multiple leaders. Branches are highly resistant to breakage and are usually well spaced displaying a crown of fine, textured, soft green foliage. The needle-like green leaves turn a coppery yellow in the fall before dropping. The small seeds are used by some birds and squirrels. In winter, the reddish-grey peeling bark makes the bare branches visually appealing to look at.
The Bald Cypress is adaptable to extreme soil conditions whether it be wet or submerged or dry and well-drained. However, it will grow faster with more fullness, vigor and overall symmetrical beauty (usually without knees) in well drained soils. It is also adaptable to a wide range of soil pH levels and performs well in compacted soils and restricted root space that is commonly found in most urban environments. They are a great choice for a parking lot island or sidewalk cutout, and also provide a valuable source for shade.
