The Florida Green Eyes is a wildflower, endemic to Florida and occurs naturally in sandhills, dry pine flatwoods, mixed upland forests, and dry roadsides. Its flower stems grow to about one foot, short leaves stay low to the ground, and bright, yellow flowers showcase green centers. Each spring, these cheerful blossoms add a splash of color to the landscape while attracting butterflies and bees for its nectar. A fun fact about the Florida Green Eyes - it is often referred to as the ā€œchocolate flowerā€ because the open disk florets emit a subtle chocolatey fragrance, smelled best in the morning. Florida Green grows best in full sun with dry to moderately moist, well drained sandy, rocky, or calcareous soils. Once established, it requires little maintenance. Its roots are deeply buried and grow quite thick as it ages, sometimes up to 12 inches. This makes for a hardy and drought tolerant wildflower.
