The Florida Nativa Dahoon Holly is a cultivar selected by the growers of Cherrylake for its genetic qualities that make it fuller, more consistent, and easier to maintain than seedling Dahoon Hollies. The dark green foliage has a larger and rounder leaf. It branches more readily and responds well to pruning which contributes to a uniquely full and even canopy. Like the seedling, it berries with a red, round, fleshy, small but noticeable fruit. The natural growing environment is the boggy soils of our wetlands, however, this small tree has proven to adapt well to harsh urban conditions where compacted soils and confined space are issues, as long as it is supplemented with irrigation. The Nativa Dahoon is versatile in many landscape projects. Grown as a multi-trunk, the Holly can serve as a full and tall, tightly clipped screen or as a solitary specimen. Grown with a single trunk, either full to the ground or with a clear trunk, it is a great selection for lawns, median strips, sidewalks, planters or patios.
