The Milkweed ā€˜Swamp’ is a Florida native wildflower known for its striking rose-purple flowers clustered together on top of tall, erect branching stems. This herbaceous perennial grows 2 to 4 feet in height and 1.5 to 2 feet wide. It exudes a milky liquid when broken and its summer blooms produce a slight fragrance that make it excellent at attracting a variety of pollinating insects. The tiny nectar cup with its upward curving horn is an essential food source for butterflies and a variety of bees. Native sweet, leafcutter and yellow-faced bees forge the flowers for pollen and nectar, and it is a host plant for the Monarch butterfly. Milkweed ā€˜Swamp’ grows best in moist to wet, well-drained soils with mostly sunny landscapes and minimal shade. Milkweed ā€˜Swamp’ can tolerate occasional drought once established. Due to its preference for wet soil environments, they grow nicely along streams and ponds. This striking plant stands out in mixed butterfly and wildflower gardens and performs well in a container.
