The Live Oak Seedling is a classic, medium-sized, evergreen tree grown from acorns. Originally, and for a number of years, Live Oak Seedling trees grown at Cherrylake were entirely propagated from acorns found under the same mother tree on the west shore of Lake David in Groveland, Florida. Reaching a height of 60 to 80 feet and a width of 60 to 120 feet, this Live Oak is noted for its wide, shady canopies. It usually has a short, broad trunk buttressed at the base forking into nearly horizontal, long branches, and a very broad, spreading, dense crown. When left in natural settings, Live Oak Seedling branches may swoop down to the ground. Live Oak Seedling grows best in full sun to partial shade in a variety of occasional wet, well-drained soils. This Florida native is considered the ultimate shade tree in the coastal Southeastern United States and an excellent choice for urban landscapes. In natural settings, Live Oak Seedlings often become host to Spanish moss and resurrection ferns, which drape from branches and line trunks during rainy seasons, contributing to their iconic, picturesque presence.
