The Green Saw Palmetto is a slow-growing native shrub commonly found in Florida’s wild and cultivated landscapes. It typically grows 3 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, though it may reach up to 15 feet in dense habitats. Its stout, ground-hugging stems form dense clusters of green, fan-shaped fronds that often obscure the trunk. In spring, it produces fragrant yellow-white flowers, followed by small yellow fruits that ripen to blue-black from August through October, attracting birds and other wildlife. Well-adapted to Florida’s sandy soils, the Green Saw Palmetto requires no cold protection and tolerates drought, heat, and salt—making it ideal for coastal gardens. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and performs well with minimal care. Commonly used as a native groundcover beneath trees, in mass plantings, or as an informal hedge, it adds texture, resilience, and ecological value to the landscape. This versatile shrub offers lasting beauty and habitat support with little maintenance.
