The Purple Lovegrass is a fairly small, short-lived perennial reaching only about 2 to 4 feet in height. Native to Florida, Purple Lovegrass can be seen growing in flatwoods, sandhills and prairies. It grows in dense, low to the ground tufts with stiff, arching leaves. In late summer these fine-textured tufts take on a reddish-purple hue resting at ground level. Distinct purple inflorescences with light and airy blooms appear in fall. These delicate seed heads are a food source for birds and other wildlife. Purple love grass is also a host plant for the Zabulon Skipper butterfly caterpillar. Purple Lovegrass grows best in full sun, sandy soil and well-drained landscape areas. It is tolerant of hot, dry conditions; however It has very low tolerance to salty wind or direct salt wind. This Florida native species is an excellent choice in wildlife friendly landscapes such as a meadow or native plant garden. Its attractive purple hue in the fall makes it an attractive option when used as a border in massed plantings.
