The Stokes Aster is a short-lived perennial that naturally grows in Florida landscapes such as savannahs, pitcher-plant bogs, and wetlands. Reaching between 1 to 2 feet in height, flowers bloom on and off starting in late spring into summer and until a frost. The numerous and solitary flowerheads have a stunning bluish-lilac hue that exudes a captivating, unusual fairy like flare. Flowers can grow up to 4 inches across and are complimented by a basal cluster of dark-green, lance-shaped leaves. Butterflies and bees are attracted to this mystical wildflower for its nectar. Stokes Aster grows best in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. This plant requires very little maintenance, is heat tolerant, and generally deer resistant. To extend the blooming period with further growth you can cut off the spent flower heads. This versatile and showy wildflower is a captivating addition to a wildflower, butterfly or water garden. They look lovely when planted in containers and are a great statement piece as a cut flower in a bouquet or flower arrangement.
