The Sabal Palm became the Florida state tree in 1953 and appears on the Florida state seal. It can grow up to 80 feet high with a slender unbranched trunk diameter of nearly twenty-five inches. Fronds sprout at the top in a fan-like manner, spreading in multiple directions. The fans are often wider than long, creating a full round canopy. A unique feature of the Sabal Palm bark is the distinct pineapple-like markings where old leaf stalks were attached. Thousands of tiny, creamy-white, fragrant flowers attract butterflies and bees in the late spring months. Fruits ripen in late fall and are a fan favorite to sea gulls, woodpeckers, cardinals, blue jays and numerous other wildlife.
Sabal Palm grows best in full sun to shade, in a variety of soils with medium to poor drainage. Because of its striking height structure and large fronds, the Sabal Palm is a great choice for a street tree and areas where its ornamental nature can shine.
