The Sunshine Mimosa is a low-growing Florida native groundcover that can be found naturally in open, undisturbed areas, along roadsides, and occasionally in pinelands and forests. Its leaves are blueish-green with a featherlike appearance, stems are hairy and woody to herbaceous. Pinkish-lavender flowers bloom from spring through fall and look like powder puff cake-pops sprouting about a foot from the ground. The funky flowers attract many pollinators and are pollinated mainly by bees. It is also a host plant for the Little Sulphur Butterfly. Sunshine Mimosa grows best in full sun but will tolerate some shade. It’s adaptable to well-drained, dry to moist sandy soils. A substantial amount of water is needed until established. Once established it can stand up to drought conditions; and its fairly deep root system can assist with erosion control. The Sunshine Mimosa loves to spread, making this an effective groundcover with quick results. It is not a climbing plant, it enjoys sprawling over the ground and tolerates being mowed, making it a good turf alternative Mechanical edging keeps this plant with crisp edges and will control its spread.
