The Sycamore is a fast growing Florida native tree reaching an impressive height of 75 to 90 feet and a width of 50 to 60 feet. Pyramidal in youth, the shape spreads out to a more rounded or irregular crown, supported by large, round branches as it matures. These branches are spaced about every 2 to 4 feet creating a strong structure for the tree. The beautiful white bark peels off highlighting its most attractive feature. The leaves are bright green and smooth on top and pale green on the bottom. In the fall, they turn a bright yellow before dropping their leaves. Though the Sycamore produces fruit, it does not attract wildlife. Sycamore is best suited for compact soils which are moist and do not dry out. They prefer full sun and thrive in a variety of soil environments. They are known for their moderate drought to salt spray exposure tolerance. Due to its large size, the Sycamore is a great choice for a highway median landscape or a street without a sidewalk as the root system can raise and destroy nearby sidewalks.
