The Buttonsage is a moderate to fast growing woody shrub native to Florida reaching a height between 4 to 6 feet and a 2 to 3 feet spread. This upright, branching perennial has rough leaves, ovate to elliptical in shape, with toothed edges. Leaves smell like sage when crushed. Small, dense clusters of creamy white flowers with a touch of lavender on the tips and a yellow center provide a visually stunning effect to any landscape. Butterflies and bees frequent the fragrant Buttonsage blossoms for its nectar. Birds take advantage of the succulent purple fruit produced as well as its habitat cover. Buttonsage grows best in full sun or minimal shade and well-drained soils. It thrives in dry, sandy or limestone soils and is drought and salt tolerant. This subtropical shrub is also known for its resistance to hurricane wind. Due to its long flowering period, Buttonsage is an excellent addition to tropical and subtropical butterfly gardens. It can also be pruned to a dense, compact form and used as a hedge plant.
